The Latest (Page 2)

At the October, 2011, meeting, three members told stories from their family histories and how they uncovered the information.

John Frenie has traced his family back to Bordeaux, France, with two sons who escaped the French Revolution to Alsace-Lorraine (then in Germany). He connected using the "Frenie" name to people in Munich who sent him a newspaper article dated 1926. His next research will use http://www.verwandt.de/karten/ to find "Frenie" names in the Alsace-Lorraine region.

Judy Ermlick had mostly English names on her family tree, but used one "Utzler" name to connect back seven generations. She was encourage to pursue her English heritage since there are many resources on that island. With first and last names, and an approximate date for a Birth or Marriage or Death together with a location the website http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ may give you exact details. Then you may order the official records from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Tomi Larson sent us her success story by Email from Oswego, NY. (A testimony to the "reach" of MLGS) Ms. Larson used "Google Alerts" to discover anyone who recognized the unusual family name "Reitano." "Google Alerts" scans Google searches for any items being published that contains the name. Then reports the article to you. Tomi succeeded in finding a connection and via series of Emails to complete the family connection complete to an island off the coast of Sicily. In order to set up Google Alerts, go to Google.Com, click on the "More" tab at the top of the page. On the drop down menu, click on "Even More" and near the bottom of the page find an icon called "Alerts."

Enter the name (and place if you have a common name) and put your Email address in the "deliver to" box. You can preview the current activity in the box on the right hand part of the screen. If you do not have a "gmail account", you will be sent an Email to confirm that you are the person who entered "the alert."
